INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Libertarian Party of Marion County (LPMC) is calling on citizens to express their support for a new ordinance which would remove a ban on carrying guns in city parks. City-County Councilor Ed Coleman (L) introduced the ordinance earlier this week. The proposal would bring city policy in line with Indiana state park and, effective February 22, national park policy.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard (R) has already threatened to use his veto if the measure passes. LPMC Chairman Timothy Maguire says, “The Mayor seems to think this issue isn’t important to the general public,” but the public has already begun to speak. A new poll on IndyStar.com shows that 72% of the public supports the measure.

A Parks Committee meeting is scheduled for February 25 and the public has a chance to have its voice heard. Maguire continues, “We’re calling on gun-rights advocates to help change [the Mayor’s] mind by showing up and speaking out.”

The Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in the United States, and is the only non-major party with ballot access in the state of Indiana.  Libertarians believe in a small non-intrusive government that is financially responsible, administratively competent and socially tolerant.
